rambutan season

we're having rambutan season since a couple months ago. during this time of the year, you can see mount of rambutans for sale everywhere.
the name of rambutan came from the word rambut (hair), so rambutan means the hairy fruit.

Well I'm sure this fruit tastes like "rambutan" ... but does it taste like any other fruit you can think of? Furry or hairy for sure. Interesting stuff. Am I likely to find this imported into the USA?

the inside is white with a seed and the taste is a bit like lychee.
once, i saw this fruit in asia shop in europe, i don't know about USA. you can find it in can too, without skin and seed.

I love the fresh rambutans, but they are expensive after taking the flight all the way from Asia to North America. They are available from Asian grocers; the canned ones are very good too. I love to make an iced drink with a bit of the syrup, then soda water and ice and lots of rambutans in the glass. There are even the canned variety with a piece of pineapple fitted inside each hollowed rambutan.

Here in Honduras they were confused and now are locally called "liches" pronounced in Spanish "leeches".
They are a fun fruit to eat, but you must have sharp teeth sometimes to get the meat off.

I love these and have not seen them in a long time here in Seguin, Texas! Cool shot.
